Soweto Tour: (Half day: ± 4 hours)

Be exposed to this famous city within a city, whose past political activism affected the entire South Africa. Segregation laws passed from 1903 until 1905 approved the creation of Black Townships at the outskirts of the cities. Soweto, the biggest Township in South Africa was established in 1931, on the western part of Johannesburg.. Soweto played a major role in the fight against Apartheid.

Soweto Township is where the two Nobel Peace prize winners, Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu’s houses are situated in Vilakazi Street, Orlando West. You will be taken through Diepkloof Extension, Hostels, Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital, Bara Taxi rank, Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication (Freedom Square), Regina Mundi Catholic Church, Hector Pieterson Memorial, Mandela’s house and Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s house. Breakfast, African Cuisine buffet lunch, and an A-la-carte menu are available at Sakhumzi restaurant.

Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital

Chris Baragwanath HospitalThe largest acute hospital in South Africa, with almost 3000 beds. Referrals for specialist treatment are received from all over the country, as well as surrounding African States. It is a public hospital run by Gauteng Provincial Health Department. The hospital has a staff establishment of 5000 of which 600 are doctors, and 2000 are nurses.

Bara Taxi Rank

The biggest and busiest bus and taxi rank in Soweto. Bara taxi rank is located along Potchefstroom road opposite Baragwanath hospital. All Soweto taxis converge here, and this makes it a lucrative market for informal traders. Bara taxi rank is also used as a major terminus by local and long distance busses. 2000 taxis are estimated to be operating daily in this taxi rank.

Walter Sisulu Square Of Dedication (Freedom square)

The square is named after Walter Sisulu who was sentenced to life imprisonment with Nelson Mandela in 1964. Walter Square is situated in Klipspruit Soweto. This is where the ANC Freedom Charter was signed on the 26th June 1955. A National Monument is created at Walter Sisulu Square of Dedication in remembrance of the Freedom Charter.

Regina Mundi Catholic ChurchRegina Mundi Catholic Church

Regina Mundi Catholic Church is the largest Catholic Church in Soweto. The church was built in 1964.The name in Latin means ‘Queen of the World’. It played a pivotal role to the townships resistance against apartheid. When political meetings were ambushed in 1976, the church offered its protection to those struggling for liberation. What started as a political meeting ended as a political rally. Today, Regina Mundi Catholic Church is a Memorial of Peace. Today people can live in Peace and Prosperity.

 

Hector Pieterson Memorial

Hector Pieterson Memorial is named after Hector Pieterson (Pitso), a 12 year old boy who was killed on the 16th June 1976. The memorial interprets the memory, legacy and history of the 1976 national uprisings. Since its establishment in 2002 it has developed a diverse collection of oral testimonies, historical documents and the material culture of the uprisings.

Mandela House

Nelson Mandela HouseMandela House in Vilakazi Street Soweto was built in 1945. Mandela lived here until his arrest and imprisonment in 1962. The family continued to live in this house until Mandela’s release from prison in 1990. The house was turned into a museum (heritage site) in 1996. Mandela House (museum) provides an effective, efficient and meaningful experience to all visitors, informing them of the former President Nelson Mandela’s story in the context of his life as a whole, in a manner that promotes human rights, democracy, reconciliation, mutual respect and tolerance amongst the people of South Africa.

Desmond Tutu's House

Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s private house is not opened to the public; but it is a short walking distance from Mandela House in Vilakazi Street. Archbishop Desmond Tutu is a South African activist and a retired Anglican Archbishop, who rose to worldwide fame in the 1980s, as an opponent of Apartheid. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

Sakhumzi Restaurant

Standard breakfast is served at Sakhumzi. An A-la-carte menu is available after 3 pm. African cuisine buffet in the form of dumplings, rice, pap, sump and tripe is available in the Sakhumzi restaurant menu.. Other meals served include mutton, beef, chicken, fish and salads.
